When you create a new data access page, Access assumes that you want to bind the page to the current database. Access sets the ConnectionString property of the page to a value similar to the one you ll find in the CurrentProject.Connection.ConnectionString property in your database. The connection string includes information about the database provider that the data access page must use to connect to the database, the location of the database file or server, and other properties relevant to the type of provider such as user ID and locking options. Providers supported by the Microsoft Office Data Source Control (MSODSC) are Microsoft JET 4.0 (the database engine for Access desktop databases) and Microsoft SQL Server (the database engine for Access project files). You might have noticed that Access displays a warning message the first time you save a data access page to let you know that the connection string points to a physical drive, path, and file name. Remember from Figure 27-1 that all requests for data from a data access page originate on the client machine, so the ConnectionString property must point to a location known to all clients. Before you publish your data access page on an intranet server, you ll probably need to correct the location to point to a share on a file server to which all clients on your network have access. A second way to specify the connection from your data access page to your database is to set the ConnectionFile property to point to a Microsoft Office Data Connection (*.odc) or Microsoft Data Link (*.udl) file that contains the connection information. The primary advantage to using a connection file instead of a connection string is that you can use the 1082

The one disadvantage is that you must also place this connection file on a network share accessible to all users, and the ConnectionFile property must specify a network share path rather than a physical drive, path, and file name. You can edit and update either the ConnectionString or the ConnectionFile property using the properties page of the data access page. Open any data access page in Design view, open the Properties window, and choose Select Page on the Edit menu. You can find the ConnectionFile and ConnectionString properties on the Data tab, as shown in Figure 27-57.

Notice that the ConnectionString property points to a data source on a physical hard drive. If you move the database on your machine, you ll need to update the location. If you want to publish this page to an intranet server, you must place the database on a network share and change the data source to point to that share.

Although you can certainly type changes directly into the ConnectionString property box, Access provides a link to a builder to help you construct the string correctly. Open any data access page in Design view, open the Properties window, select the page, and click the ConnectionString property on the Data tab. Click the Build button at the end of the property to open the Data Link Properties dialog box as shown in Figure 27-58.

Using XML data with data access pages By default, Access sets the data properties of data access pages to use live data from your database As you learned in 25, Publishing Data on the Web, Access can export the data from tables or queries in XML format a standard for exchanging data between applications Notice that the list of properties shown in Figure 27-57 contains three properties you can set to cause your data access page to work with XML When you set the UseXMLData property to True, the data source control uses the XMLDataTarget and XMLLocation properties to locate a set of XML data to use as the source data rather than fetch the data from your database When the XMLLocation property is dscXMLEmbedded, the data source control looks for an XML specification within your data access page that has the name you specify in the XMLDataTarget property.
