The definition of the paint() method is also different from paint() methods used in previous listings in this chapter The paint() method uses an if statement to determine whether the image variable is referencing an image memory block You ll recall that the image variable was initialized to null at the beginning of the MyCanvas class definition If the allocation of the memory block failed in the constructor, the image variable is still null, otherwise the null value is replaced with a reference to the image memory block The drawImage() method is called once the paint() method verifies that the image variable isn t null The drawImage() is passed the image variable and the coordinate of the image boundary box The image is then positioned in the vertical and horizontal center of the image boundary box as indicated by the image anchor point parameter The commandAction() method definition is the same as in other listings discussed in this chapter Listing 7-19 is similar to Listing 7-17 except for statements within the try {} block and catch {} block in the definition of the MyCanvas class constructor You ll notice that the try {} block contains one statement that calls the createImage() method The createImage() is passed the name of the immutable image that will be associated with the instance of the Image class returned by the createImage() method No other statements are necessary because the image is already created and the createImage() method automatically requests a block of memory to store the image However, there is a possibility that the device is unable to load the image into memory; for example, it may not be able to locate the image file that is passed to the createImage() method Therefore, you still need to place the call to the createImage() method within a try {} block The catch{} block is practically the same as in Listing 7-17, except the message that appears in the alert dialog box reports that the image file cannot be opened.

A common way to organize data elements into groups is to first assemble a list of all data elements, as discussed previously in this chapter When this is done, you ll notice that some data elements are duplicated because they are used by more than one entity Duplicate data elements must be removed from the list Although this is an intuitive process, you must be careful because not all data elements with similar sounding names are duplicates Let s say there are two data elements, zip code and postal code At first glance these appear to have the same meaning A zip code is another term for postal code or is it A zip code is a specific kind of postal code used in the United States Postal code is a general term that also applies to postal codes used by countries other than the United States The difference is subtle, but could have an impact if you assume zip code and postal code are the same For example, many relational databases contain a table of zip codes, where only valid zip codes are stored The table also contains the city and state that corresponds to a zip code Postal code data may or may not be contained in a relational database table since it could be difficult to identify all the postal codes from every country and maintain this list as postal codes are modified
