You can set the VideoView s media controller by calling setMediaController() to enable the play, pause, and seek-to controls. If you want to manipulate the video programmatically, you can call the start(), pause(), stopPlayback(), and seekTo() methods. As we mentioned, the example in Listing 9-4 plays a video file from a web server. You can also play local files. For example, a common use case requires video playback of a file located on the SD card. We ll discuss this use case next.

view. If you do not set values for these controls, the default values will be the current date and time as known to the device. Finally, note that Android offers versions of these controls as modal windows, such as DatePickerDialog and TimePickerDialog. These controls are useful if you want to display the control to the user and force the user to make a selection. We ll cover dialogs in more detail in 5.

Android also offers an AnalogClock and a DigitalClock (see Figure 4 11).

Playing back video from the SD card requires little code, but it does require some prep work with regard to creating and configuring the emulator with the SD card. By default, the Android 1.1 emulator is not enabled with an SD card, so you first need to create an SD-card image and configure the emulator to use the SD card. After the card is created and the emulator is made aware of it, you can then use the Android tools within Eclipse to push the video file (or any other file) to the SD card. After the file has been loaded onto the card, you can run the video sample to play the video file at /sdcard/movie.mp4, for example. To configure an SD card for the Android 1.5 emulator, see 12.

Fine control over the code and the data can be a significant drawback to rolling your own CGI functions. You have to maintain all the code you write (unless you are very, very lucky), and more code means more maintenance. You must also implement any feature you want. Some features, such as multipart file downloads, are not simple feature adds and aren t even supported in mature and robust libraries such as Ocamlnet.

As shown, the analog clock in Android is a two-handed clock, with one hand for the hour indicator and the other hand for the minute indicator. The digital clock supports seconds in addition to hours and minutes. These two controls are not that interesting because they don t let you modify the date or time. In other words, they are merely clocks whose only capability is to display the current time. Thus, if you want to change the date or time, you ll need to stick to the DatePicker/TimePicker or DatePickerDialog/TimePickerDialog.

The controls that we have discussed so far are fundamental to any Android application. In addition to these, Android also offers a few other interesting controls. We ll briefly introduce these other controls in this section.
