To select a slide, you must click the check box to the left of each slide to indicate which ones you want to publish. You do not have to publish all slides in the presentation deck, but you must select at least one before the Publish button at the bottom of the dialog box activates. Before you can publish the slides, you must specify where you want to publish them. When you start from the slide library, SharePoint provides this information to you. However, starting from PowerPoint means that you must enter the URL of an existing SharePoint library in the Publish To text box. If you do not know the exact name of the library, you can enter just the root URL to the SharePoint site and then use the Browse button to drill down further into the site to locate the folder. However, the folder must already exist. The Publish Slides dialog box cannot create a new slide folder for you automatically. The Document Library is the most common library type. It can hold any document type that you would normally find in a directory on your computer s hard disk. A document library, like a disk directory, typically stores various file types with little or no relationship to each other. However good file management applies as much to SharePoint libraries as it does to your hard disk. Just as you would create different directories for different types of files, projects, or applications, you should consider organizing your document libraries so all files in one document library have a common focus, perhaps even a common type.

Caution You must first create the folder in the SharePoint library where you want to publish your slides. Entering a URL to a folder that does not exist will not create that folder.

Once you have published the slides in the library, they appear in the library list, as shown in Figure 1263. Like most lists, you can customize this list by opening the view drop-down menu and selecting the Modify This View option. However, the default view provides several useful pieces of metadata about the slides.

The Form Library stores the XML source documents for forms created with Microsoft Office InfoPath. Users with InfoPath installed on their local computer can form definitions stored here and then publish them as templates for other libraries. I cover working with InfoPath and form libraries in more detail in s 9 and 10.

The Picture Library provides a common place to store images for content pages in your site. You might also use a picture library to store images or photographs for your sales or marketing staffs to help them provide a consistent message. Picture libraries also provide a storage location for pictures used in web pages. You will learn more about picture libraries in 12.

As with picture libraries, a check box precedes each slide, allowing you to select on which slides you want to perform specific actions. When you open the Actions menu, as shown in Figure 12-64, you will not find as many options as for the picture library.
