When errors do occur, you have three basic options for handling them. First, you can simply pass the problem back to the calling application to deal with for example, by throwing an exception or by just sending an error message back to the user. This could be a good option in circumstances where you suspect that the user is at fault (i.e., if a query is based on mistyped information), and you need to get the user to try again. Second, you could try to correct the problem on the spot by performing an alternative action (such as redirecting a query to a mirror server). Finally, you can record the error, either by making an entry in a log file or by e-mailing information to the DBA or system administrator, so that he can take appropriate action (e.g., if a linked server is down).
