The consultant may choose to use either structured and standardized interviews or unstructured, conversational, and nonstandardized interviews. The consultant asks questions of relevant people involved with the organization. For example, a researcher may wish to consult with a psychologist on measures to assess depression for a particular study. The consultant interviews the researcher about the goals and design of the study. Once the consultant has a solid understanding of the needs of the researcher, he or she will be able to suggest relevant measures of depression. Or, as another example, suppose the recent reorganization of a small company has proved challenging and stressful for most employees. A psychologist consultant is asked to evaluate the reorganization process and to suggest how best to deal with the associated stress. The psychologist interviews first the company s management team and then each of the key employees. The series of comprehensive interviews enables the psychologist to assess the problem(s) before offering intervention strategies and advice. Surveys and questionnaires are a second common method of assessment in consultation.
