Rather than install and run testing tools on your workstation, or to get around their limitations for testing the output of your applications, you should consider web-based testing tools. These are generally very easy to use, are most often free, and perform many of the same tests as those offered by local testing tools. You simply visit the URL of the testing tool (I provide the URLs of several throughout this section) and point the tool to a page on your site to be tested. The tool executes the page on your server (and, therefore, is looking at the resulting HTML of the page) and achieves the same result as the local-testing tools but without you needing to copy/paste the HTML into an editor. Several such tools are available, including the W3C HTML Validation Service (a free tool at http://validator.w3.org), Dr. Watson (a free tool at http://watson.addy.com/), the CSE online HTML validator (http://www.htmlvalidator.com/), and NetMechanic (a commercial service with trial versions at www.netmechanic.com/). Netscape s Web Site Garage has been discontinued. Do a search on html validation in your favorite search engine to find more.
